Guide to UBC Library Document Delivery Service

What is UBC DocDel?

UBC DocDel (UBC Library Document Delivery) is a service that retrieves UBC Library materials for you. This service is offered through the UBC Library Catalogue and available to current UBC students, faculty, staff, and community borrowers. A valid UBC/Library card is required.

Is there a charge for DocDel?

Fees apply for most services. Please refer to the fee schedule tab.
Document delivery is free to UBC faculty, staff, students and hospital staff for the following services:

  • Book and article delivery from one UBC Campus to another (UBC Point Grey, UBC Robson Square, UBC Okanagan, UBC teaching hospitals: Hamber, BMB and St Paul’s libraries)
  • to UBC undergraduate students and faculty in the Island Medical Program or Northern Medical Program
  • to UBC distance education students who are enrolled with the Interlibrary Loans Dept.
  • to UBC students, faculty and staff who qualify for Enhanced Library Services (books retrieved for pickup only)

Turnaround Time

  • Orders received by 5pm are processed by 5pm the next day, Monday through Friday
  • Fax delivery requests are filled within 24 hours
  • Items for pick-up are normally available within 24 hours and are held for 3 days
  • Campus mail delivery (including intercampus between UBC Okanagan and UBC Vancouver) takes 2-3 days

Place a UBC DocDel order

  1. Ordering a journal/magazine/newspaper/article? Check UBC Library holdings first.
    • Go to the UBC Library homepage
    • Choose Find
    • Enter the full title of the journal/magazine/newspaper
    • Select search by Journal/EJournal title
  2. The following materials are not available via document delivery; please check before proceeding:
    • Items out on loan, in bindery, etc. (order at a later date)
    • Full issues of journals
    • Items in Rare Books & Special Collections, Reference, Course Reserve, and other similar collections (some copying might be possible)
    • Requests in excess of copyright law limits, e.g. full issues of journals
  3. Follow these steps to place your order:
    • Go to the UBC Library homepage
    • Click on the “Books and More” Tab
    • Search for the book or journal/newspaper title
    • Click on the title you are interested in to open up its record
    • Click on ‘Order via UBC Document Delivery‘ in the blue ‘Actions’ box on the top right of the page
    • Follow the instructions on the subsequent page to complete the process
    • When prompted, enter your UBC/Library card barcode and PIN. If you do not know or have forgotten your PIN, reset your Library PIN online, or come to the circulation desk at your closest UBC Library branch to have your PIN reset.

NEW POLICY EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 21, 2010: For Community Borrowers, book delivery between UBCO and UBCV campuses is free of charge. Fees apply to deliveries on the same campus or directly to the office or home.

Non-profit organizations
Book or article pick-up or delivery by mail $12.00 per item
For-profit institutions
Book or article pick-up or delivery by mail $20.00 per item*
UBC Access Copyright Surcharges
Book $.25 per page
Newspaper article $1.00 per article
Journal article (1-7 pages) $4.00 per article
Journal article (8 or more pages) $8.00 per item
Law report headnote or decision $1.50 per item
Law report headnote and decision $2.00 for both

*plus surcharge required by the UBC Access Copyright Agreement
