Course Reserve
Policy & Procedure
- Faculty can place books on short-term loan to ensure students have access to limited materials by completing the online form
- For items in the Library’s collection, processing material can take up to 14 days
- For items not held in the Library’s collection, ordering and processing material can take 2 to 3 months
- Books
- Books may be placed on 2 hour, 1 day, or 3 day loan (some branches do not offer all loan periods)
- The loan period may be shortened if more than one faculty member requests the same document or book
- Unused items may be removed from short term loan at the discretion of Library Reserve staff

Course Reserve Loan Regulations
- Borrowing privileges are limited to UBC students and faculty
- Extended loans MAY be allowed for material not in demand or required for courses
- 1 & 3 day loans are due at closing time on the due date
- 2 hour loans are due in 2 hours except if borrowed within 2 hours of closing, then due time is 30 minutes after opening the next day
- Course reserves must be returned directly to the Library branch where they were borrowed
Course Reserve Fines
- 1 & 3 day loans: $5 a day to a maximum of $30 per item
- 2 hour loans: $1 an hour
- Lost charges are added for items more than 28 days overdue
Looking Up Course Reserves
- Specific book/article: select Title in the UBC Library catalogue
- Specific book chapter: use chapter or book title in the UBC Library catalogue
- Course name/instructor’s name: select Course Reserve in the UBC Library catalogue and then search by Instructor or Course Name
- e-Reserves:
- Select Course Material (Reserve/Online) under Find off the UBC Library homepage and enter the course’s four letter Subject Code (eg. ANTH) and Course Number (eg. 100)
or - Select Course Reserve in the UBC Library catalogue, scroll to Course Material (Reserve/Online) and search and enter the course’s four letter Subject Code (eg. ANTH) and Course Number (eg. 100)
- Select Course Material (Reserve/Online) under Find off the UBC Library homepage and enter the course’s four letter Subject Code (eg. ANTH) and Course Number (eg. 100)
